turbo problems, any more ideas? 700 1992

I posted yesterday about the fact that my 745 turbo (99,000 miles) is whining/moaning right at and just into the boost range. I indicated that the whining seems to be coming from the left, but I can't be sure. I neglected to mention that there is also a louder-than-usual sound of rushing air coming from the right side, which I understand is where the turbo is. There is a little black smoke when I jump on the accelerator and the turbo kicks in, and there seems to be turbo boost, though less than before and more delayed than before. There doesn't seem to be an inordinate amount of smoke, though, and it doesn't appear to be blue. The car runs as normal when the turbo isn't engaging, even at freeway speeds. Should I avoid driving the car? Any other suggestions? Thanks again, as always!
