1995 volvo 960 900 1995

My husband and I are in Volvo hell. We bought a used 1995 960 1 1/2 years ago with 65K miles. The car currently has 85K miles. We have had all the required maintenance performed. We have put in brakes twice, and other piddly but expensive repairs.
My husband was on the way to work a couple weeks ago and the temp gauge jumped around and then died. He coasted off the freeway, tried to turn in over once and it was a no go. Had it towed to our mechanic who thought it was the timing belt, I wish that was all it was now.
He tells us now that we need a new engine. He checked all the obvious things that one would consider causing a blown engine. Oil, water, timing belt, etc. Our mechanic has always been very honest, never over charges us and sometimes will give us free services because we are there a lot.
We are talking with the dealership to see if there is something they are willing to do to help us. Has anybody ever heard of a 960 going off the deep end so quickly?
