According to the Volov book I have on the 82's, the VIN should be something like this.

YV1 A X 45 4 X C 1 000000

The position at A is either A 240 series or B 260 series
The position at X is vacant
The number 45 is the location for the engine type
41 B21A
47 B21F Turbo
48 B21 LH Jetronic
49 B21F
69 B28F
77 D24 (diesel)
84 B23E

The number 4 is the location for the body type
2 2 door
4 4 door
5 wagon

X is a calualted figure from other values

The letter C is the model year
A 1980
B 1981
C 1982

The letter C location is the manufacturing plant
0 Kalmar Sweden
1 Torslanda Sweden
2 Volvo Europe
3 Canda

The six digit number is the serial number or chassis number
For 1982 year the numbers start at
306780 for 4 clyinder 2 door
686100 for 4 clyinder 4 door
368310 for 4 clyinder 5 door
125110 for 6 cylinder 4 door
