Mid '88 B230F crankshaft changed. Why?

I was reading in the manual that midway through '88 the B230F crankshaft chagned. There wasn't much detail about the change, other than how to tell if your engine is new/old style, and that the main bearing journals were larger on the later ones.

Was there a problem with the older mains? Did they switch from a forged crank to a cast crank, and beef up the mains because cast is weaker?

My car has the later crank, and I'm just curious if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
