Fuel Presure Regulator 200 1984

So I disconected the regulator and the car runs better then before. It is not having that fuel starvation problem and the engine does not shudder in first on take off. Allso there is no hesitation when accelerating in 2nd. I assume that this means that not only is the regulator busted but that the car is now running rich. My question is how does that regulator work and why is the car running better with it disconected? Thanks.
