IIRC, Volvo was still using Garrett (Allied Signal) turbos in 1988. You should be able to use your existing turbo on a newer engine if you also use the existing manifold. But the newer 700/900 series turbos have a smaller Mitsu. turbo that spools up at a lower RPM and thus have more low-end torque and less "turbo lag." Your call.
