need help with auto. tranny probs. 200 1985

I guess I could start by saying hi! I'm new, I've been a Volvo owner for about 5 years now and love my car. She's got 278K on her and for the most part runs like a beauty. Looks great too. Eventually I'll get a pic on. On to the seriousness. I have problem with my auto. transmission that I am not exactly sure how to diagnose. The problem that I am having is with the overdrive or 4th gear, which ever you want to refer to it as. What is happening is that I will crank it cold and get going. On a cold engine, it will occasionally shift into 4th/OD. Once the engine heats up though, if it is in OD, it will kick out. If it is not in OD, it refuses to shift into it. I have replaced both the switch in the shifter handle as well as the overdrive relay, since I had heard that these are two cheap easy to fix problem solvers that many times will solve the probs. No luck with either. I have been reading thru my manuals trying to think of something, but once again, no luck yet. Funny enough, my little brother's car, a '84 240 with an auto. tranny has been doing the same thing for a while. Can someone give me a few ideas to start looking in to, please? :) Thanks all!!! I appreciate all the help in advance.
