herky-jerky accelartion (sometimes) What's the deal? 200 1983

Sometimes when I accelerate the car immediately goes into a spasdic jerk fest, almsot like when you don't give enough gas in first gear on a stick shift. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does sometimes.

Also, when you hit the accelerator, it takes a half-second before there's any response. Is that normal?

My car is an automatic 1983 240 turbo wagon. Thanks for your ideas!
