Auto OD quit on the highway--no warning 200 1992

About 1000 miles back, it quit on the highway for just a couple of seconds. I was going up a hill and thought it might have just decided to downshift. Then it went back into OD and I have had absolutely no problems since.

This time is different. I was cruising along earlier today, and it suddenly dropped into 3rd. Now it won't even try to engage--it's completely out. The indicator light wasn't working before this happened, so I can't offer that to provide a clue.

I've read some past threads on auto OD problems and my first guess is that the problem might be the OD relay. But I don't have any experience here. Does anyone have some good advice on troubleshooting this?

I *think* there was a single click or pop (not loud) from behind the dash just at the moment the OD quit.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Doug Harvey
