warning lights not coming on 900 1994

Hi. My wife informed me that her oil light had flickered. So I checked the oil, and lo and behold, it was low. However, after adding more oil, I noticed that none of the warning lights (except the SRS light and seat belt light) come on when the key is tuned to the start position. I don't know if they ever did, but I assume that the oil light and other warning lights as well should light up to indicate that they are properly working. I was reading old posts about a red wire to the alternator that may be grounding out, but the posts indicated that this wire would not affect the oil light. Any ideas what this may be?
