ATF overflow 200 1984

84 245Ti going up a steep grade (Grapevine) on a warm day at high speed with a/c on...

All was right with the world til smoke began billowing in the rear. First, I just knew the turbo ate itself... but all gauges in including coolant temp, oil temp and oil pressure read within normal limits and engine continued to give plenty of power.

Pulled off, opened hood, engine bay smoking, like hot oil burning off exhaust manifold/pipe. Looked under car; sure enough, ATF was everywhere.

Only explanation I have is that ATF was slightly overfilled at last service, heated up on that long grade, expanded and out the top of the trans somewhere.

Engine cooled on downhill grade and all is normal, drove next 250 miles w/o incident. AYF level checks OK. Now I appreciate trans coolers better,,,

But what do I have to worry about... could any internal or external seals be blown? Trans does not appear to be leaking, but it is dark. Will check again in AM.

Thanks, Robert
