POP goes the volvo 200 1981

My brick is feeling geriatric. Start attempt tonight produced a turnover with a big hiss, a pop, and then nothing. We tried starting again, and there was a LOUD pop and a rather substantial air poof from the engine. There is a cyllindrical bosch object with a "T" coming out of it to the right of where you add oil. (What is that cyllingdiral object?) The hose on the rear of the T was disconnected(I'm assuming that's where the pop came from). Would the popped off hose be the cause of the problem, or is the popping off the result of another problem elswhere? I don't know if this is related, but she's been a little finicky with the cold starting lately.
Any advice for something a rookie can troubleshoot? Thank you in advance to all the incredible bricksters out there.
