OD behaving badly! 700 1989

Hello all:
After installing a CD player last month, a wierd thing started to occur. The "shift up" arrow idiot light started to come on at random intervals. Now, with my daughter driving the car in Austin (350 miles away ) the car's OD comes off, the tachometer shows 5K RPM and the engine reves up at highway speeds as if the Od has been turned off...pushing the switch in & out repeatedly sometimes solves the problem (OD engages, RPM's drop to normal) and sometimes not.
Is this a wiring problem or an OD solenoid going south?
Any suggestions?
