No power to A/C compressor 700 1992

I have a 1992 740 I recently bought used and can't get the AIR to work. I checked the fuses, put the blower fan on, and I checked with a voltmeter and still no power to the compressor. The light in the on/off switch on the dash doesn't come on either! ? Is the compressor powered THROUGH this light (ie.if the bulb is burned should the compressor still get power?) or is there something else I'm overlooking? I checked the FAQ's and didn't find anything to help me. Thanks for the help!
