Memorial Day Project and This Stud is Broken

Memorial Day weekend: perfect day to help son Peter to overhaul the front of the engine in his 92 940: new seals, belt, tensioner, drive belts. Should be simple and relaxing, right? I am under the car removing the seal carrier for the crankshaft and he is above, replacing the cam bearing retainer after removing the top seal. "Dad, what is the torque for this nut?" "Uh, fourteen pounds but check the manual." I continue working and hear nothing until "Dad, I've got a problem." He has broken the stud off, apparently daydreaming while pulling on the correctly-set torque wrench. Damn! Of course, there is not enough thread on the stud remnant to back it out with a nut. Looks like the machine shop on Tuesday, since I don't have a stud remover that will fit into that space without pulling the entire cam. I just hope I can tow the car over there and have them do it without needing to pull the head out.

I was pleased, however, that I did not yell or scream at him: he chalked it up to experience and I will chalk it up on my Mastercard. In the meantime, he will be bicycling.
