installing in-line magnetic filter for power steering 900 1993

I'm going to be installing an in-line magnetic filter for my power steering, since it's in great shape at 120k, and I want to keep it that way! But I'm not sure which line to splice into: The IPD diagram is not very clear, although it looks like the filter is put into the bigger (lower) line. But I thought the top line was the return line. I don't want to mess this one up, especially since the filter has to point in the right direction for flow.

Has anyone done this before? Any suggestions?
