Air Flow Meter Repair? 200

Stopped by my son's house yesterday to say hello. My 85 245 was running good when I cut it off. Upon restart the engine would barely start and would not idle smoothly or rev up (classic air meter symptoms). I unplugged the meter and the idle smoothed out, but the car wouldn't rev past about 2000 rpm. I limped it home (3 miles) and replaced the meter with a spare that I have....problem solved. My question is: Has anyone ever repaired a air flow meter? Any tips or problem areas to look for? I have a fully equipped shop and am very familiar with electronics. Can it be done?
