Cheap odometer fix! 700

Last week as my brick's odometer was turning over to 134,000 miles it stopped on 133,999 and 5\10 miles. The trip odomoter stopped as well. I got repair estimates from two local speedo shops of $235 and $85 if I brought the speedo head to them out of the car. Even $85 was more than I wanted to pay. After explaining the problem to one guy, the first question he asked is "did the odometer stop at 999?" When I replied yes he said that a small gear that runs the service light had become jammed and they simply cut this gear out to prevent future problems. When I heard this, the gears started working in my head (one of the few times according to my wife) and I took out the guage cluster, removed the clear plasitic bezel and turned the ones digit cylinder in the odometer enough to complete the change to 134,000. After putting things back together the odometer worked fine. If it jams again, it is easily fixed in 20 mins. Hopefully it won't though.

When removing the guage cluster, I cut the vacuum hose to the turbo boost guage approximately six inches from where it connects to the nipple on the boost guage. The hose had hardened over the years so I did not want to risk breaking the nipple trying to remove the hose. I purchased a vacuum hose connector at the local parts house to hook the vacuum line back up. Next time it will be even easier to remove and install the guage cluster.

Hope this helps.
