Front suspension, how can I get the cartridge free? 200 1985

Specifically, how can one go about getting the top nut off using tools that one might have at hand (the one that is recessed and covered with the cap, that holds the top of the shock absorber). Also, what could I use to get the screw on cap at the top of the actual cartridge off. I know there has to be some tools for both of these operations (the Haynes manual lists one for the cartridge cap thingy), but was wondering if there are home remedies. I do have access to coil compressors and I am confident I could do this, I just don't have the tools for those two things. Thanks.
