Alternator question 200 1986

My 86 240 is not charging. With the car off, the voltage at the battery terminals is 12.36VDC. With the car running, the voltage drops to 11.87. My question is about the terminals. The bigger connector on the alternator is positive, the spade connector goes to the idiot light. What is the wire that hooks to the smaller terminal. Is it ground? or does it go somewhere else?
