To keep the number and length of wires running around under my dash to a minimum, I spliced my voltmeter positive lead into the cigar lighter wire (black, I recall). For lighting I tapped into one of many small-gauge brown wires in behind the center console. They are all affected by the dimmer rheostat, so your gauge(s) will dim and brighten with the stock dash lights.
