Bucks stalls/starts/bucks dies, stuck on the side of the road for 2 hours. 200 1980

Got a weird one. My 1980 244 DL with CIS K-jet quit on the way home from work. When it finally came to rest the dash lights were glowing dimly with the key out, no start during this time, after waiting for 2 hours for a tow truck the lights went out, so I tried it, it started, and I made it the rest of the way home. Any ideas? Would a failing alternator cause this situation?
Thanks as always.
