'86 245 Reverse light stays on

The reverse light on my '86 245 GL (auto) has decided that it wants to stay on whenever the car is running. I tried an archive search on the bbd but couldn't find the exact problem. How do I go about troubleshooting and fixing this new feature? I was behind the dash for something else (spedo replacement) when this new option occurred. The archive search seemed to point to the gear shifter, but I'm suspicious that I might have loosened something up when taking off the dash. Any suggestions?

Chris
