Ok, so I said my 965 was "virtually" trouble-free. The one issue that has plagued it for the past two years is the torque-converter lock-up function. When it shifts from 2nd to 3rd the lockup engages with the gearshift (making for a very abrupt shift) and sometimes sticks. It also will get stuck in the locked-up mode even when your foot is off the gas and you apply the brakes. It doesn't unlock until you're going about 5mph (keep in mind it's shuddering like crazy at this point and nearly stalling) and then unlocks when the tranny automatically downshifts to 2nd when you're nearly at a stop. I know this was a common problem among 960s when I was on the list before but no one knew how to fix it. Has anyone out there figured it out yet? To date, I have replaced the TCM, transmission speed sensor, TPS, temp. sensor, cleaned all contacts about 2K times and confirmed no shorts/breaks in any of the wiring.
This weekend I'm tearring into the transmission itself. I'm going to first try replacing the lock-up solenoid (maybe it's sticking?) and then go through the valve body and look for anything "fishy." Before I did this, I thought I'd ask the "collective intelligence" to see if there were any other ideas.
btw: Volvo just wanted to "guess and replace," with the ultimate decision being to just replace the transmission and "see if that fixes it." Sorry...don't have a couple grand to waste on a guess...
TIA,
Lance
