A couple weeks back, I posted a question about my intermittant power brakes on the 164. Problem being...sometimes...(only after lunch), the brakes would hesitate a second before the power assist kicked in whenever I'd step on teh pedal. Then it would go away after a 30 or so minutes. I had ruled out vaccuum leaks, one way air valves...etc.
Well...being that it didn't happen very often, I only got to it today. But it has been more frequent since. Seems to have more to do with hot weather...or hot under the hood as it would be after being parked for an hour during noontime lunch. It was suggested that my booster could have a bunch of brake fluid in it from a leaky master...so, this morning I pulled the master...and sure enough, I siphoned about a pint of brake fluid out of the booster. I didn't replace the master cylinder yet. I figured that the fluid would have basically made the surface area of the diaphram smaller, hence...less effective. Only problem is...draining the fluid seemed to make the problem worse. But it could be that it just happens to be about the hottest day so far this year. Now the power brakes seem to kick in only if I really stomp on the pedal...so, its sort of an all or nothing deal...very little brakes, or locked up all 'round.
All I can figure now is that the booster itself is siezing due to heat, and not wanting to move...or some such thing. But..I figured I'd check here first. Is it possible for the booster to be shot, but still work fine sometimes sometimes...and never leak any vaccuum? I really can't think of anything else but the booster (and of course the master is bad, but...it doesn't leak much). Any other thoughts? Could a slightly leaky (I only have to fill it once every three months or so) master cause that by just being stiff?
Thanks,
Matt
