Installing aux. ATF Cooler 900

I looked in the FAQ but didn't see an answer to this specific question? I'm going to install an aux. trans. cooler (I think heat is what fried my solenoid) and am wondering if I can bypass the cooler in the radiator altogether. I'm not concerned about having enough cooling capacity b/c I would install an aux. cooler that would be big enough to make up the lost capacity of the stock cooler. My question is, does the radiator serve to heat-up the transmission on cold starts and would this function be lost by bypassing it? There is some concern that the stock coolers in 960s sometimes burst (mixing oil and water) so I would like to just not use it if possible.

TIA,
Lance
