Clunk when accelerating in reverse 200 1987

I know differentials in general and have just finished assembling a corvette diff... i think the clunk you are referring to is "backlash" or play between the pinion and ring gears. When you put it in reverse, the ring gear is actuated on the other side of the teeth as when you have it in forward, and the "clunk" is the pinion gear hitting the ring gear. If tolerances are tight, you will not hear this noise. I don't konw what they are supposed to be.. a Vette differential backlash, for example, is between .006 and .009inches. Dana 44 truck differentials are between .01 and .015. Good luck!
