Sounds like the prepump is not working. There is a pump inside the fuel tank that pumps to the main pump.To test it remove the fuel line between the tank and the main pump. Have someone crank the engine for a few seconds. There should be a solid stream of fuel from the tank. A bad/broken diff would impossible to drive.
