Intermittent Bulb Out Light 700 1991

Bricksters,

My "hey you idiot, you have a bulb out. Change it before you get a ticket" light is acting strange.

First off, in case it matters, I run with my headlights on at all times. My insurance company considers auto on/off headlights the same as day time running lights and they give me a nice discount for leaving them on.

Now for the problem. Please bear with the length, as I am trying to be as explicit as possible.

When I press the brake pedal and signal for a left turn, the bulb out light will flash. Sometimes in sync with the dash indicator for the left blinker, sometimes 180 degrees out of sync. This does not happen all the time. Last night, I pressed the pedal and the bulb faded on to a dim light, and then went out. I did not have the left blinker activated when this happened. This happened 2 more times last night, but not every time I pressed the brake pedal.

The brake/left blinker problem happened two times again this morning at stop lights. The bulb out light was flashing at full strength 180 degrees out of sync with the blinker the first time, and at full strength in sync with the blinker the second time. Both times, I turned off the headlights (trying to see if it was a tail light problem) and the bulb out light went off. When I turned the headlights back on and the bulb out light did not relight. All this took place in a matter of 10 seconds, and I was still at the stop lights. Again the problem did not happen at every stop light or brake/left blinker situation. The problem has yet to happen in a brake/right blinker situation. BTW, there were no bad bulbs in either tail light. I checked when I got to work.

I had this problem several years ago and was prepared to spend a fortune on whatever part was required to fix it. My mechanic (who has since move out of the area) fixed it, never charged me for it, and I stupid me never thought to ask him what it was he did.

I have found that opening the trunk and a hard smack over the left tail light takes care of the problem for a few days, but after the fade in to dim and fade out scenario, I know it is time to get serious as I do not want to fry anything.

As an aside, I check all my lights as a part of my weekly maintenance checks. Is there a way to bypass the dash light, or is it more trouble than it is worth.

Any takers????

As always, thanks in advance.

Regards,

David
