How do you tell if motor mounts are bad 700 1988

I'm trying to track down some strange noises that occurred very suddenly. I drove the car and shut it off, everything appeared normal. When I hit the starter about 30 minutes later, it sounded like it was bolted to the right side of the firewall. Also, when driving, I feel like the motor is in the passenger compartment with me. I guess the question is do the mounts fail suddenly like that or is there someplace else I should be looking?

I should add that the car is at 224,000 miles on the original mounts.
