I have a '89 740 and have replaced both headlights. If you look on the lens of the headlight you see the model, then just go into your local auto store and purchase replacement(approx. $10). If you other headlight has alot of time on it replace them both at same time. You don't need any of the fancy zenon or extra bright type of headlights, just get the basic light. Under the hood you will see clamps that hold the headlight frame in place, simply squeeze them together and gently pull out. Be careful not to break frame. The there are a couple screws(4) to remove and the wiggle wire connector off back of headlamp. Reverse procedure to install. To check alignment turn on lights in evening and shine on wall or garage door to make sure they aren't pointing off to one side or the other, use screws to ajust tilt of light. It is pretty simple, hope this helps.
