Indicator all of a sudden wouldn't, couldn't 245 DL wagon 1980 200

A couple of weeks ago a few blocks from home I indicated I was making a turn, the indicator light on the dash went on, but a steady light without the usual acompanying sound and light efects of click/blink/click/blink, etc.
Tested it when I got home, working fine.
As it worked just as it should since then I had more or less forgotten about this until yesterday when there was the silent steady light again, the same for right or left. This happened a couple of blocks before my destination. On the way home again it worked, however I can see that this is most likely going to get worse and don't want to be the position of making an important lane change and they fail out of the blue again. Possible cause?
As always, I am truely appreciative of any input.
