Trunk Trim - How to put in new 'clasps' 200 1989

I've got a broken plastic clasp on my trunk trim. Went to the junkyard and got a replacement plastic clip/clasp that's in tact. After successfully getting the rear trim off of the trunk without breaking any pieces, I'm having a heck of a time trying to put the new one in. The base of the plastic piece is wider than the railing, and I don't want to force it underneath the silver railing, even though that's how it goes.

Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!
