Steering problems 140-160 1970

Hi! My 1970 144 isn't steering too well. All is seemingly ok untill the steerig gets to a certain point, then stiffens up, and 'cracks' through to being 'ok' agian.

I looked at all the steering ball joints, and I'm 99% sure they're ok.

I've noticed with car in the air, no load on front wheels that at this one certain point, the steering wheel turns (you can rock it for about an inch in either direction) but the front wheels don't really move, but they sort of jerk. I'm convinced steering box failed/failing.

My limited knowledge of steering boxes make me thnik the worm (is it called that? The screw the bearings travel up and down) has 'gone bad' at that point - or a few of the bearings...?

Are steering boxes retreivable? Is adjustment worthwhile? What's the procedure? Are they rebuildable (easily!)? I haven't checked oil level. I notice a red plastic plug on top of the box.

Also, how do I remove the steering wheel? It's differenet from Haynes, which suggests just pull off the centre. unsrew horn ring, etc. The centre of my wheel is long and narrow, and appears to be part of the horn ring itself. Though I've noticed 2 screws on rear side of steering wheel, near the centre, ie, where wheel goes through the sharf/column.

Many, many thanks.

Kevin
