Tachometer jumps around 700 1991

I have a 1991 740 Wagon.
The tachometer jumps around from time to time.
I will be driving at highway speeds, the tach
reads 2,500. Then it jumps up between 3,000 to 3,500 for a few
seconds then back down to where it was before. I don't
speed up or slow down while this is happening. Any ideas on
how to correct this problem? Thanks in advance.
