the transmission from hell 700

My daughter was driving her '89 740 & she coasted to a stop. The engine reved but the aw71 automatic transmission did not function in any gear. When I checked the dipstick, there was NO fluid. I topped off the fluid & after two delayed shifts it worked perfectly. No slip, no hard shift, no leaks, smooth... 30 days later (30 days of perfect complaint free operation!) she coasts to a stop again. Engine revs but no-go in any position of the gearshift. This time it looks like there is too much fluid on the dipstick. My first guess is a clogged filter screen preventing the fluid from circulating.
But it is only a guess. I need some advice. I don't know where to start. Please help.
