Engine won't turn off 120-130 1968

Hi,

My Amazon won't turn off after it has started. Other info:
* the ignition switch is working fine, and there is no power from it to the coil when it is turned off.
* the ammeter warning light does not come on when the ignition is turned on prior to starting. It's got an alternator from a later 240 with an internal regulator. WHen I turn the ignition on (but don't start it) there are no volts at the point on the alternator where the wire to the warning light comes from. Should it have 12v then?
* Also, the battery blew some acid out of all cells. That sounds like over charging to me.

Does this all add up to the voltage regulator gone south? But why won't the engine turn off?

Thanks for any help. This has got me stumped.
