valve/tappet clearance checking questions 700

Has anyone checked the valve/tappet clearances themselves? I have Haynes book.
It looks very straight forward.

Any helpful hints? things to watch out for? things to look at while I am in there? If I need new shims, are they dealer only items? I would think they are.
