Overdrive went out yesterday 200 1984

I was driving home on the interstate when I disengauged the o/d (M46) and I re-engaged it and it started slipping. It would just slip, it finally kiccked later. Later on I was in overdrive and it popped out and will not engage. The light on the dash and the relay click so it seems to be an internal problem. I had some problems recently where it would stay in o/d even after I turned it off. I recently changed thetranny fluid to a synthetic based fluid (amsoil supershift) I believe that probably hastened the demise of the o/d. Any clues as to what may be the cause of the problem and appx. how much would it cost to fix.
