'86 740 fuel pump relay issue 700

I have a 1986 740 GLE wagon. The car just quit running and I had to have it towed home. I have spark but no fuel. I have read a great deal about the fuel pumps and relays in the FAQ here as well as in many posts. It seems that only one of the 2 coils is operating. If I hold the second coil closed on the relay the fuel pumps run and the car will start. Since I understand that the fuel shut off is based on no signal from the tach, I thought maybe the tach had failed, but when I do get the car running the tach is functioning.. As soon as I let the second coil go the car quits again. Do any of ya'll have any ideas where I need to go next.

Thanks
Doug
