B234F transmission cooler- Standard equipment?? 700 1990

I have acquired a 1990 740 sedan that I am parting out. I was suprised to find the AW transmission on this car was equipped with a cooler spliced into the lines running to the radiator. It would appear to be original equipment. Was there some reason the slightly different AW transmission in the 16v engines required this additional cooling?

While I understand the transmission in these cars has a slightly different gear ratio is there any reason it is not a plug and play item when mated to a B230F or even an FT? Thanks for any enlightenment.

Randy
