another a/c question 900 1993

here's another a/c question. i'll try to describe it... It's been going on for two summers now. Everyday after work and my car has been sitting in the hot (understatement) TX sun I start it and turn on the a/c. After 20 to 30 seconds I hear and feel all the way through the gas pedal a LOUD thump/thunk. It sounds horrible. I was wondering what could cause this... fyi during my 100K service (end of last summer) my local indep. volvo guy says i'm low on freon and my compressor is cycling a lot. more additional info: it doesn't do this when the car is cool i.e. night or mornings and the a/c blows cold air but it does cycle a lot.
