Cracked Catalytic Converter 200

I took my car into my mechanic because it was running rough and loud. A tune up fixed the roughness which he said was mainly due to worn spark plugs. He said the loudness was from a cracked catalytic converter. I told him to hold off on fixing that for a while because of $$. He quoted me $330 to fix it and said it could wait a little while. My question is, how long can it wait and will waiting cause any other damage? Thanks!!
