242 turbo ticking sound 200

On acceleration I am hearing a ticking sound. Not a pinging but a metal to metal ticking sound. It only happens on acceleration, not when ideling. Could this be the turbo itself or would it make that sound all the time? When sitting in park and you rev the engine it will make the sound also but not near as loud as when the car is moving. The sound isn't rhythmatic, but very sporatic.
Also, when driving around 40mph is the turbo providing boost at all?
