Groaning & Clunking Front Suspension... HELP 200

My thoughts are this is related to bad bushings on the strut tower, but I'm not sure how to diagnose this problem. Since having the stuts replaced 3 years ago by a mechanic the clunking noise went from a very low level clunking to a loud clunking noise. AND I MEAN CLUNK. When I hit those nast speed bumps or high spots on the road it really sounds bad. Until recently this was it. Now the front end has a groaning noise, like the sound of rubber against metal or maybe even metal against metal.
Does anyone have experience with this problem?
And how hard is it to replace the bushings on the strut towers?
And are there any bearings in the tower??

Thanks - Marty
