R12 is perfectly legal in the US. Many believe in myths that it is illegal, not made any more, costs $85 per can, causes ozone layer problems, global warming etc etc. Even some mechanics will try to tell us this. The truth is that r12 is still quite legal and will be for a long time and can be purchased for under $20 per pound. You may want to check more throughly to see if it really is available in Canada.
