940 transmission 900

Lately, when I come to a sudden or gradual stops in my 94' 940T wagon, the car will lurch or shudder, almost like the transmission is slipping. I have checked the fluid level both when hot and cold and it appears to be fine.The gear shifter has a bit of play in it when in D, will move forward a 1/4 in. I am wondering if it could be the fluid needs to be changed out. I can't find any records that previous owner had it done(only had car for a month) Any thoughts would be appreciated.
