Speedometer troubles.... 700

I have a 1987 Volvo 740 GLE Wagon with 258,000 on the clock.
The trouble is that the speedo stops working most of the time, but will work a short time once in a while. I've checked the FAQ and they don't seem to apply to my problem because not once has the odo stopped working. I can watch the miles still tick off even though the speedo is reading 0 (while moving of course). Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help.
