Cooling Fan Clutch 200 1986

Has anyone serviced a viscous-coupling fan clutch? Is it possible? There are two halves to the unit, but I'm not keen on opening up if it's not serviceable (I can't get parts in France so have to ship them over).

My '86 240 runs hot when climbing or idling in heavy traffic. Having followed all advice here (rad, sensors, pump, ignition timing etc), engine has improved but still gets warm - have checked the fan and it spins freely when warmed up.
