rumble problem solved! 700 1989

Recap of problem: on my girlfriend's 1989 740 B230F AW70 182K I replaced rear engine oil seal, front and rear transmission oil seals, transmission output shaft bushing, transmission mount, all 3 u-joints and the driveshaft support bearing and rubber mount. After reassembly there was a rumble and vibration in the driveline that didn't used to be there. There was excessive vibration from 25-28 mph and loud rumbling (drowning out most road and engine noise) from 45-60 mph.

It turns out that I had installed the middle u-joint incorrectly. Even though the driveshaft spline has a key which only allows you to put the 2 halves together one way, the middle u-joint still has to be installed correctly or else the 2 halves of the driveshaft will be 180 degrees out of alignment.

After correcting this bonehead mistake everything is nice and quiet (and vibration free!) again.

Lesson -- be sure to install new u-joints (especially the middle one) exactly the same way that you take the old ones out.

Hopefully this can help someone else.
